Special May Course and JKA Dan Grading
Saturday 14th May 2016
JKA Scotland held its Special May Course and Dan grading with Sensei Ohta 7th Dan JKA on Saturday 14th May 2016 at the Dunfermline High School, Dunfermline.
Once more there was a great turn out from JKA Scotland instructors and black and brown belt students to support and train on this special course.
Following the warm up at the start of the session Sensei Ohta’s instruction started with some basic Kihon training which concentrated on the importance of making set position between techniques as the class went through various combinations. This then moved onto some kumite drills with a partner that worked on body shifting but concentrating on making correct distance for counter attack.
For the next part of the session the class was split into separate Dan grades and brown belt classes in two separate halls. The brown belt class was taken by JKA Scotland Technical Committee instructors which concentrated on Kihon for Shodan grading training and the Dan grades were taken by Sensei Ohta concentrating on higher level Dan grading Kihon training.
The final part of the course concentrated on Kata training with the class being split into four separate groups over two halls with Sensei Ohta and the JKA Scotland Technical Committee instructors all teaching a different Kata to one of the groups. Each person training was then free to choose which Kata they wished to train for the final part of the course.
Everyone then came back together again in the main hall at the end of Kata training where Sensei Ohta gave a final overview of the days training and also spent some time answering any questions on the day’s session.

January Special Kata Course 2016
Sensei Ohta 7th Dan JKA
JKA Scotland held its first event of 2016 with a special Brown and Black belt Kata course with Sensei Ohta 7th Dan JKA on Saturday 23rd January at Dunfermline High School, Dunfermline.
These Kata courses always prove very popular with JKA Scotland members with this one being no exception shown by the turn out on the day.
The course started with Brown and Black belts training together. The first Kata to be practised was Kata Kanku Dai. Sensei Ohta is known for his structured classes and this one started with Kihon training which was specifically geared towards the Kata Kanku Dai. This then moved onto the practise of the Kata itself broken down into sections including application practise with a partner. There then followed a question and answer session. The Kanku Dai part of the course then concluded with a demonstration of the Kata by Sensei Ohta.
Following a short break the class was then split into separate Brown and Black belt classes with the Brown belts moving to a separate hall.
The Black belt class then continued along the same structure with Sensei Ohta teaching Katas Bassai-Sho and then Meikyo.
Brown belts were taught by JKA Scotland Technical Committee instructors Sensei Simpson and Sensei Stewart who covered Enpi and Bassai-Dai.
Following the completion of Kata training both classes came together again where in closing Sensei Ohta gave a short talk on general Kata training including the importance of training Kata Kanku Dai and advice for older members on how to try and retain the smoothness and fluidity in your Kata as you get older.
Thanks to Sensei Ohta for a fantastic kata course and as usual his enthusiastic teaching style and ability to demonstrate and explain Kata techniques in-depth made for a very enjoyable and educational course. Thanks also to all who attend.
